Career-Related Learning Standards at Sprague High School
Background: Beginning with the class of 2007, the state of Oregon requires that students show proficiency in each of six Career-Related Learning Standards and also show the Extended Application of those standards outside of the classroom. The Career-Related Learning Standards incorporate skills developed throughout the school and through school activities. These skills also should be demonstrated in the community, in activities and/or in jobs.
Sprague's Plan:Sprague has adopted a model that incorporates a checklist of items for each standard and also a reflection paper that tells how the student has applied those skills and has met the Extended Application requirement. Rather than require careers classes for graduation, we began an Advisory program in September of 2007. The end product of the senior advisory is not credit or a grade, but whether or not the student meets career-related diploma requirements.
Seniors must conference with their Advisors about their Senior Checklist and their CRLS Reflection between December 12 and April 4. Conferencing continues during each senior advisory period. For early scoring, seniors can give their CRLS Reflection to their advisor during October and November. Semester graduates – CRLS Reflections due November 30, 2007. June graduates – CRLS Reflections due February 15, 2008.
