HOW TO HELP YOUR STUDENT BE SUCCESSFUL

Sprague Counseling Department

1.       Set your student up for success:

                                                       a.      Make sure they have a planner to record their daily homework and due dates.

                                                      b.      Plan a system for keeping homework and other projects organized such as a notebook with dividers/pockets.

                                                       c.      Plan a way to ensure that homework is turned in on time, such as a folder in front of binder where all completed work is kept until turned in.

                                                      d.      Set up a consistent “homework time” and place.   Find a place with minimal distractions, so the student can fully concentrate on homework.

2.      Communicate with your student:

                                                       a.      Ask daily to see their planner, or the tool they are using for organization.

                                                      b.      Check daily on work in process, especially for organization, completion and neatness.

                                                       c.      If you have specific questions regarding a specific class, ask your student to communicate with their teacher, and ask for a progress report to be brought home.

*The best way to achieve student success is to have your student involved in the process!

3.      Communicate with teachers – they have the specific academic information you need to know regarding your student’s status.  Teachers do not have telephones in their rooms.  The best way to communicate with teachers is through email.

                                                       a.        All teachers’ emails are listed in the Sprague Student/Parent Handbook which was sent to all parents in September

                                                      b.      You can also link to teachers’ emails by going to Sprague’s home page   sprague.wvi.com   Click <Staff Email> on top bar and then you can enter first few letters of teacher’s last name, or use pull-down menu on right to search for names by department or pull up all names

4.      Students do receive periodic computer printouts of their standing in the class, showing assignments due, turned in and points earned.  Ask your student to show you this.  If your student does not have one, ask your student to request one from the teacher.  The policy on acceptance of late work varies, but was covered on the syllabus your student received at the beginning of the class.  Your student should be able to show you that syllabus.  It is full of very helpful information.

5.      You may also download from the Sprague web site two items that your student can use to keep track of assignments and get interim grade information.  On the Sprague web site, click <Guidance> on top bar to see form downloads.

                                                       a.      Weekly Travel Card – given to teachers to record current class status

                                                      b.      Weekly Assignment Sheet – for the student to record assignments each day

6.      Sprague has a Homework Club Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday before school 7:15-7:40a.m. in room 14 and after school 2:45-3:45pm in the library.   Teachers can provide the student a pass to Homework Club.
